24 Hours of Lemons: Tow Strap Rule Change - Rigid Hooks Are Out
Share
Rigid tow hooks are out at 24 Hours of Lemons. Effective 3/1/2026, only flexible tow straps can be proud of the body — front and rear. If your car's still running a solid hook or eye poking through the bumper, it's not tech-legal anymore.

Here's what the rule actually requires and how to get your car compliant before your next tech inspection.
WHAT CHANGED
Under Rule 3.10.5, tow points must be clearly marked, purpose-built, and flexible. Rigid hooks or eyes are no longer allowed to extend past the bodywork — the only thing allowed to stick out is the strap itself. This applies to both front and rear tow points.
WHAT'S STILL REQUIRED
- Tow points at both front and rear
- Minimum opening size of 2.5 inches
- Mounted to solid components using Grade 8 or better fasteners
- Easy to see without kneeling or lying down
- Marked with the word "TOW" and an arrow
WHY IT MATTERS
Rigid hooks are a hazard for corner workers who have to hook up a stalled or wrecked car under pressure, sometimes in traffic. A flexible strap does the same job without leaving a solid steel edge sticking out where someone can catch a hand, a leg, or another car.
FASTLAP SUPPLY TAKE
This is a cheap, easy fix — don't let it be the thing that holds up your tech pass. If you're running an old hook-and-eye setup, swap it for a proper flexible tow strap kit before you show up. Mount it to something solid, not sheet metal, and make sure it's visible without anyone having to crouch down and go hunting for it.

FAQ
Can I keep my rigid hooks if I also add a strap?
No. Only the flexible strap can be proud of the body. A rigid hook underneath or alongside it still fails tech.
Does this apply to both front and rear?
Yes — both tow points need to meet the new standard.
What if my strap is already flexible but the opening's too small?
Still a fail. Minimum opening size is 2.5 inches regardless of strap type.
